Who was Democritus?philosophy/the ancient world 2022. 6. 3. 09:23반응형
Imagine a super curious guy living in Ancient Greece, around 460 BCE. That’s Democritus! He was always asking big questions about the world, like:
-What is everything made of?
-Can you keep breaking things down forever?
Now, while other philosophers were busy talking about gods and mystical forces, Democritus had a wild idea:
-The entire universe is made of tiny, invisible, unbreakable pieces called “atoms.”
The father of Atomic theory
Democritus thought:
-If you keep cutting something-like a piece of bread-eventually, you’ll reach a point where it can’t be divided anymore.
-These tiny, indivisible particles? He called them “atomos” (which literally means “uncuttable” in Greek).
-Everything-people, rocks, stars, even thoughts-was made up of different arrangements of atoms!
Sounds familiar? That’s because this is the basis of modern atomic theory, even though scientists only proved it thousands of years later!
His other cool ideas
-No Gods needed: He believed the universe wasn’t controlled by gods but followed natural laws. This was shocking in ancient times!
-Everything is just atoms & void: There are only atoms moving in empty space-no magic, no divine plans, just matter in motion!
-Happiness=A peaceful mind: He thought the best way to live was not chasing luxury, but having a calm, thoughtful, and wise life(kind of like Buddhism!).
Why was he not that famous?
Well, his ideas were too ahead of his time. Many people preferred philosophers like Plato and Aristotle, who were more into purpose, souls, and gods, Aristotle even rejected the atomic theory! So, Democritus’ genius was kind of ignored…until modern science caught up!
Final thought
Democritus was basically the first scientist to figure out that everything is made of tiny particles-but he did it without a microscope, just pure thinking! If he were alive today, he’d probably be a top physicist or a crazy genius working on quantum mechanics.
Cool guy, right?
